Merewether Surf Club finish1 (Mobile)The last of six clubs and probably one of the larger projects got under way on Friday 25th October and was set to be completed late the next day.

This SLSC was set to get a fresh coat of paint outside as well internal bathrooms, hall ways and function room. This CityServe project was led by Rob Dalais from Central Newcastle Church with again great lead up planning by Jason Cleare from Newcastle City Council. With a lot of preparatory works completed such as new windows and an external wall all was set for the CityServe weekend.

phone 4865 (Mobile)Again great weather greeted the workers and it got off to a great start with around 70 of the YWAM team, club members and the arrival of Stan ‘the Man’ Mossima ensured the first  day was a cracker. Throughout the SLSC projects volunteers have worked tirelessly and with great energy which has created a fun and productive environment! As lunch was enjoyed on the club veranda another wave of YWAM volunteers arrived which injected enough people to make great progress. On a end of day walk through it became obvious that Saturday was always going to be a big one.

Saturday saw all hands on deck with a collective of the community including Central Newcastle Church, YWAM and Merewether SLSC members. Juicy Beans Cafe chimed in always at the right time providing volunteers with free coffee and a visit by some of the Knights capped off a great couple of days! The generosity of the community continues to flow with sponsor’s Scafflink, ATF Fencing, Instant Access, Dulux, Water for a Cause, Singo’s Meats, Bakers Delight Market Town and Growers Best Fruit Market.

Rick Prosser, Jason Cleare, Rob Dalais, Toni Woodcock and Leanne Cleare celebrating the finish!

Merewether Club President, Nick Newton along with club members Mark and Toni Woodcock were amazed at what was accomplished in just days! Enjoying the experience they continue to rally the club members to complete every surface not touched in the club.

Merewether SLSC was a tremendous experience for everyone! It was the end of a 5 week and 6 SLSC CityServe journey that produced great results! A unique partnership between church, council, SLSC’s and the business community which may well redefine how things are done in future years!
