NSW Local Government Managers Australia: Management Excellence Awards 2013

“In October 2013, the CityServe project got under way with many hands pitching in. In conjunction with the Christian churches of the Hunter, CityServe aimed to transform Newcastle through service. More than 800 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty in an unprecedented five-week session that saw makeovers at Newcastle’s six iconic but ageing surf clubs. The project generated more than $500 000 in donations from paint and scaffolding to sausages and bread rolls. Staff from The City of Newcastle were pivotal in coordinating the works program, completing around $150 000 of preparatory maintenance works at all the surf clubs in the lead up to the start of the CityServe project. The support from the Newcastle community was unprecedented. From politicians to surfers fresh in from catching a wave, everyone pitched in and by the end of the month not only were Stockton, Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beaches all repainted, repaired and looking fantastic but together we managed to develop a partnership model that is easily transferable across a range of projects and industries.”
