Proposed-Projects-2014For 2014, the CityServe initiative has announced a full diary of volunteer service projects aimed at transforming Newcastle during the month of October.

This year’s projects, announced today, will improve areas right across the Newcastle local government area (LGA), with projects chosen in each ward of the city. Most projects will target public facilities on parklands, with volunteer teams cleaning, repairing and sprucing up shade shelters, pavilions, grandstands, ticket boxes, toilet blocks and storage sheds at parks, reserves and ovals.

Launched in 2012, CityServe is focused on bringing churches together to serve the local community. Rick Prosser, CityServe chairman and Newcastle LGA project coordinator, said this year the organisation would like to bring visible and positive change to all four Newcastle wards.

CityServe is about people getting their hands dirty for the sake of others, the Church in action across Newcastle and the Hunter,” he said. “We want to bring the power of service to make a difference in our community.”

In October 2013, more than 1,000 CityServe volunteers rolled up their sleeves in an unprecedented five-week session that saw makeovers at Newcastle’s six iconic but ageing surf clubs at Stockton, Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar Beach, Dixon Park and Merewether.

“Last year, there was a clear need for upgrades to the city’s surf clubs, and Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy asked CityServe to meet that need,” said Prosser. “The results were truly remarkable and the community support was tremendous. Now, we want to take that same community spirit and unleash it across the city’s parklands.”

The Lord Mayor is a strong supporter of CityServe and was keen for The City of Newcastle to work in partnership with the organisation.

“The CityServe concept builds on the great tradition of community service in Newcastle,” said the Lord Mayor. “It is inspiring to see churches, Council, businesses and the community come together to transform our city through service.”

“After the incredible accomplishments last October, I was keen to see what plans CityServe would have for 2014, and I am pleased that communities and neighbourhoods across Newcastle will benefit from this year’s efforts.”

“I encourage organisations to come forward to support this effort in any way, from corporate sponsorship to donation of materials, paint, scaffolding or food and beverages for the volunteers. I have no doubt that the Newcastle community will exceed last year’s mark for support and help CityServe 2014 bring positive and lasting change to the city.”

The City of Newcastle will scope needed works on the parklands facilities and undertake preparatory work prior to the CityServe volunteers starting.

Churches and organisations can register projects they are committing to do in CityServe October 2014 on www.cityserve.com.au Individuals over 18 years of age can register to volunteer their time and skills on the same website.
